Silicon Valley Marathon

Very nice run today at the Silicon Valley Marathon. Even faster than I expected, at least in the first 22 miles. Final time of 3:43h at 8:30 pace. Raimondo and I met downtown San Jose at 6:30; usual procedure pre-start and we took off. I went fast the first ten miles keeping an eye on the Garmin, I stayed at under 8 min/mile pace. That remained the same until the half marathon point, that I passed at 1:44h, not bad. At Los Gatos I met Cristina with Paolo, the dog, we enjoyed running together for half mile until the up hill behind the LG high school. In the mean time Raimondo was behind a little. Vasona Lake went quickly, I was still in good pace, keeping the average well under 8:10, closing the 20 miles mark at 2:43h at 8:11 pace.

At mile 22, I lost strengths on the legs, I did not have much more. The marathon route leaves the trail and gets in the San Jose roads, in Willow Glen. While some of the parts are in the shade, many were exposed, and I got very tired, with initial cramps, so I had to reduce the speed even more. While I had the endurance to run, I did not have the last 4 miles in the legs, so I had to get to the finish running around 10 min/mile. That made the finish in 3:43h. I was very happy for the time even if I had a 3:36-3:38 in the watch at mile 22. A nice local marathon, with good weather, not too hot, with a little of breathe that refreshed a bit. Cristina after the stop at LGHS, met us at the dog park in Campbell and at the finish line, taking pictures of both of us, for the all run. I also crossed the finish line with Paolo, totally confused on what was happening, but surely happy too. Raimondo finished in 4:05h, little disappointed he could not break the 4h mark. Next time ... we have to plan next year.

Vasona

Last long run before the Silicon Valley Marathon next week. We ran to Meridian and back to Vasona as our usual 16 mi run. We ran fast with good splits between 7:50 and 8:50 and average of 8:23 min/mi.

Meridian

Another run to Meridian; it is dark in the early morning so the LG trail going left at Campbell is quite confined and with some lights, easy to run. Also the temperature starts to get in the 50F. Total of 9 mi in 1:13h at 8:12 pace.

Planned 16 mi per schedule but virtually participated at the WWFoR, so went for a run with Paolo for 13 mi. I will do another 10 mi tomorrow to conclude the long runs before the SVM. Same as last week run, but we added the four miles to get to Los Gatos downtown at the beginning of S. Joseph trail. The pace was little slower, still a good 8:51 pace and under the 3 hours. Total of 20.09 mi, in 2:57h.

Vasona

Planned 16 mi completed this morning with Raimondo. It looks like we are getting in the training regiment lowering down the conversational running pace. We are now at 8:40 pace that is very promising compare to the initial long runs where we were moving at 9:20-9:30. We went to the usual SVM route from Meridian to Vasona an back. Warm weather, sunny, but not too hot: 55F to 70F. Total of 15.98 mi in 2:18 h at 8:40 pace.

Lake Tahoe

Early morning run at Lake Tahoe. We decided to spend the weekend here and get some fresh air with some hiking enjoying the lake. For the run Cristina, Paolo and I went for four miles to the beach at South Lake Tahoe with the free dog-leash area, then back. Then, I added 4 mi to the Edgewood golf course.

Hamilton

Same stuff as Tuesday, 16 mi bike and 7.5 mi run to Hamilton. Still hot in the late afternoon so we took it slowly. Total run of 7.5 mi in 1:10 h at 8:56 pace.

Hamilton

Brick session with 16 mi bike and 6 mi running. The bike part was the usual commute. In the run, Paolo, the dog, was slowed down by the heat of the late afternoon, he much prefer going out in the early morning, however it seems easy going out late these days. LG Creek trail was packed with people and dogs. Nice evening anyway. Total run of 5.77 mi in 51:09 at 8:52 pace.

Shoreline

Excellent run today with Raimondo, we did the 20 mi run part of the first cycle of the Silicon Valley Marathon training. After this, we return back to 8 then 16 and again to 20 for the weekend runs. This week I also had this injury at the right ankle probably due to the tempo run on Tuesday, so I missed the Wed and Thu runs; I had to get back testing a bit a possible injury.
We started at Shoreline at 6:30AM, went around the lakes and enjoyed the beautiful dawn. This morning was strangely cloudy with a tropical storm and lighting in the distance, red and blue sky reflecting on the water, very nice. Then we took the Steven Creek bike trail to the extended end and back. To finish the run we added 7 mi at the Shoreline sloughs and turned at the small bridge close to the surfing area. Good run with conversational pace but still decent final time, and final mile under a starting rain, perfect weather today. Total of 20.1 mi in 3:01:42 at 9:03 pace.

Wednesday, September 09, 2009

Hamilton

Tempo run with Paolo this morning, I did not have much time, so we went only 6 mi to Hamilton. I tried to have a little speed in the run so we went for a 7:53 pace with best mile at 7:28. New running shoes: Asics Nimbus 11.

Lake Chabot

All day hiking to Lake Chabot, close to San Leandro. We searched for a place where the dog could be off leash. It was a great hike with nice scenery of the lake and San Francisco in a distance. About 4-5 hours with a picnic at the top of the trail.

Lake Chabot

From the official web site:

About The Park

Lake Chabot Reservoir was built in 1874-75 as a primary source of water for the East Bay. The 315-acre lake was closed to recreation for 91 years. Legislation passed in the 1960s opened the lake for controlled recreational uses. Currently, the lake serves as a standby emergency water supply. For this reason, visitors are asked to observe centain neccessary regulations to keep the waters pure.

Fishing at Lake Chabot requires a current California Fishing License with stamps and an EBRPD Daily Fishing Access Permit for all anglers aged 16 and older. California Fish and Game regulations apply. Fishing licenses and EBRPD permits may be purchased at the Marina Cafe. No live fish may be used as bait. All other legal bait and lures are permitted. Fish may be cleaned only at the cleaning station along the walk near the parking lot. Catch-and-release angling is encouraged for bass, bluegill, and crappie. However, the release of badly hooked game fish and all non-game fish is not allowed. Please bring any unwanted and tagged fish and your completed creel census card (on back of fishing permit) to the Chabot Marina. With your cooperation, we can maintain an effective fish management program to ensure that you will always have good fishing. For more information, see our Fishing page.
